Habitat A variety of wetlands, ponds, lakes, swamps, streams with dense aquatic vegetation surrounded by woodlands.

Scientific Name Notophthalmus viridescens
Did You Know? Mostly as a deterrent to other species to prevent being eaten, the toxin excreted from their skin can cause skin/eye irritation when handled. Similar but different to salamanders in that the tadpole stage they go into a juvenile "eft" stage where they live on land, near water for the first several years of their lives. When they mature to full adults they return to the water and spend their adult lives aqueously.
