Meet the Animals

Nearly 200 species of animals are represented in the Buttonwood Park Zoo, ranging from tiny frogs to enormous elephants.

With just a couple of exceptions, all of the animals carry out the Zoo's theme, "From the Berkshires to the Sea." The focus is on the land- and water-based wildlife of Massachusetts, with special emphasis on creating the natural habitats in which the animals actually live.

These pages offer information on many of the species: what they look like, where they live, what they eat, and their life cycles. Please note that the Zoo's exhibits and displays are dynamic, not static, and that changing seasons bring changes in some areas, especially at the waterfowl pond, where migratory birds are (naturally) free to come and go as they please. Therefore, now and then some of the animals featured on these pages may not actually be seen at the zoo.

On the other hand, there are also many species in the zoo that are not represented here.

The moral: The best way to find out more about wildlife from the Berkshires to the sea is to visit the Buttonwood Park Zoo in person.
